Installing a door seems like a very straightforward proposition, but it is actually quite involved in ways that are not apparent and which would be very difficult to understand for someone that has never done it.
A door, like a window, but unlike so many other fixtures of construction, is a dynamic part. Whereas other fixtures and fasteners must be sized and adjusted and which don’t move after installation, a door does.
It must not only be sized but braced properly, and the frame of the door must accommodate not only the radius of its movement, but also variations as a result of atmospheric temperature and humidity.
This makes door preparation quite involved, and in other words, there are tolerances here that are somewhat hard to work with. This is just one of the reasons that some doors are outfitted with (or at least compatible with) adjustable door hinges.
The main value of adjustable door hinges is that they give you the ability to adjust your door slab, either vertically or horizontally, in order to accommodate changes in atmospheric temperature or humidity that can cause the door to swell, therefore throwing its alignment off.
There are two main types of adjustable door hinges, which are guide hinges and set hinges. Some adjustable hinges offer the benefits of both in one single package.
Guide hinges are adjustable hinges that allow you to make horizontal adjustments to the door slab. Some guide hinges are distinguished by a set screw that sits in the middle of the hinge and has a “H” marked next to it. By turning the adjustment screw, you can move the door slab to increase or decrease the margin lines..
Set hinges are those that enable you to make vertical adjustments to the door slab. Some set hinges have an arrow on the hinge that points up or down, indicating that they offer vertical adjustments and are also usually marked with a “V”.
Other adjustable door hinges may vary slightly. For instance, the Pella adjustable door hinges we carry here have a + and - symbol on the door panel hinge leaf indicating that they are adjustable.
But beyond all those technicalities, why and when is it necessary to have adjustable hinges, and why does adjustability in hinges matter in the first place?
Why Adjustability Matters
The main selling point of adjustable door hinges is that they let you make adjustments for doors that can swell in response to temperature or humidity. They also help with the alignment of the door with multipoint door locks.
When a door swells, its alignment and sight lines can get thrown off. This can make it impossible to open or close the door; it can also result in a door that gets jammed within its own frame. Adjustable door hinges allow you to fine tune the door’s opening and closing even after it has been installed - as opposed to only being able to do it one time, before finishing the installation.
Adjustable hinges can also enable you to make fine adjustments to how the door lines up with the frame. For instance, if any measurements are out of alignment or the door is torqued, one portion of the door might be tight against the jam when it is closed, or the bolt might not communicate fluidly with the mortise that receives it. In those cases, small adjustments through the hinges can help smooth out the operation of the door, too.
These are the main reasons that adjustable door hinges offer unique value in this realm of construction, and we have some notes on effective adjustments, too.
The first is to have a second person to help you with the project when you’re adjusting the door hinges. You see, with the door in the frame, and hanging on the hinges, they will be under an immense strain. A second person can help lift the door to take the strain off the hinges while you make adjustments.
The other thing is that you should make very small, incremental adjustments. Adjust, then check the fit and hang of the door. Very small adjustments to the hinges can have a surprisingly big impact on how fluidly the door opens and closes.
Finally, do not max out the adjustments on the hinges at either extreme (being left or right, or up or down, or some combination). Doing so, taking the hinge to the limit of its adjustability, can damage it.
Beyond that, if your door is compatible with adjustable hinges, they’re a great tool for making sure your door fits, hangs, and opens and closes fluidly, regardless of the time of year or of the atmospheric conditions.
