Screen Door Handle Replacement FAQs
Screen door handles are mechanically simple devices, and except in the case of models that have locks integrated in them, are usually a single piece of metal or plastic.
This short post will answer some of the common questions associated with screen doors, handles, and screen door handle replacement parts.
1. Can you replace screen door handles?
Screen door handles can be replaced and in most instances, the project is fairly straight forward and only requires basic tools. The one caveat is that you should make sure you have the right screen door handle replacement.

2. What are some ways to make my screen door handle last longer?
The best way to make a screen door handle last longer is not to abuse it. Many people have a bad habit of yanking on the door handle, slamming screen doors, and torquing or twisting the door when it doesn’t give. Not only is this bad because it can break your screen door handle, but it can also literally twist the door itself, requiring you to replace that. The best advice is just to be gentle with your patio and screen door handles.
Beyond that, it’s also good advice to make sure your screen door handles are dusted and cleaned from time to time, and in the case of metal screen door handles, to periodically apply a coat of a compound that will protect against corrosion.
3. What causes screen door handle failure?
Screen door handles will fail when they are abused or mistreated, and in some cases, as a result of extreme age, they can crack or break. This is especially true of aluminum handles that can corrode with time and exposure to elements, as well as with synthetic materials, which will break down upon exposure to the UV radiation in sunlight.
4. Can I use any screen door handle replacement? (Are screen door handles universal?)
No, screen door handle replacements are not universal and as a result you can’t buy blindly and hope to install it. There may be a way to jury-rig it, but it’s better if you just get a replacement handle that is actually compatible with your door.
Fortunately, we represent most of the major screen door manufacturers and so we carry a wide range of branded, OEM screen door parts. We also carry in-house parts that you may be able to use to make a replacement if you cannot find the right handle for your screen door.
Also, if you can’t find a perfect match, what you can do is take a look at how the door handle is secured to the door. If it is simply mounted with screws, measure the distance between the screws and get the other dimensions of the door handle. If you can find a screen door replacement handle that lines up, you may be able to make it work.
5. How much does it cost to replace a screen door handle?
Screen door handle replacements and parts are, as a rule, remarkably affordable, and this is one of the most cost-effective parts you should be able to replace on your own. Just take a quick look at our collection and you will see that most of our screen door replacement handles cost from as little as $2.50 to just under $60, with the vast majority under $20, and many under $10. Of course, this does not include the labor of replacement, so if you can do it on your own at home rather than hiring a handyman, you can keep costs even lower.
6. What are some common problems with screen door handles?
Among the most common problems associated with screen door handles are damage arising from misuse or abuse, damage to the fasteners which causes the door handle to loosen or fall off, or damage to the door handle itself as a result of exposure to the elements, corrosion, or weathering.
