Adjusting Adjustable Door Hinges

Adjustable door hinges are a convenient aspect of modern engineering, and are pretty much exactly what they sound like. Basically, they are hinges that can be adjusted, either vertically or horizontally, enabling the door to occupy a perfect fit within the frame.

However, getting that perfect fit requires you to know how to adjust them. While there is more than one type of adjustable door hinges, this short post should give you some insight into the basic process of adjustment.

Making Adjustments to Adjustable Door Hinges

Adjustable door hinges enable a door to be adjusted within the frame without requiring you to remove the door, and most are very easy to adjust. In most cases, adjustment can be performed with nothing more than a screwdriver, though you might also want a pencil to mark adjustments and some sort of pry tool to help with the adjustment itself if making vertical adjustments.

Before you make an adjustment, mark where the side of the bottom hinge currently sits on the door with a pencil so you can use that as a reference point as you move the door in or out or up or down.

If the top corner of the door is not flush with the jamb, allowing light to shine through, then loosen the screws in the center and top hinges of the door.

If, however, the bottom corner is not flush (or light is showing through) loosen the screws in the center and lower hinges on the door.

Once you’ve loosened the appropriate screws, you can pull or push the door slab itself along the hinge. Make sure you do so in very small increments so you can check the adjustments. Retighten the screws, then close the door to check to see if your adjustment fixed the issue.

To make vertical adjustments, first make the top of the bottom hinge with a pencil so you can use that as a reference point.

Loosen the screws on all hinges except for the bottom screw on the lower hinge, then insert the pry bar underneath the door to support it. Now you can loosen the last screw; the pry tool was necessary to support the door.

Loosen the last screw, then raise or lower the door by roughly the same distance you noticed there was a gap at the top or bottom of the door, supporting it in that position with the pry tool before you tighten all hinge screws. Then you can check your work by opening and closing the door.

Regardless of the adjustments you’ve made, if you’ve installed weatherstripping around your door, make sure the door creates a relatively tight seal against the weatherstripping so as to create a seal that will help improve the door’s energy efficiency.

Following this same basic protocol, you can make either horizontal or vertical adjustments to doors that have adjustable hinges.

The Value of Being Able to Adjust Door Hinges

Adjusting Adjustable Door Hinges

Adjustable door hinges let you create a perfect fit between the door and its frame, which creates a more weathertight seal as well. As a result of this, adjustable hinges are one of the ways to improve a door’s energy efficiency, which can save on heating and cooling costs. On top of that, a door that closes more tightly will help keep out pests while also keeping your home more private by sealing sounds both in and out.

Some things you might look for that will tip you off that your door needs to be adjusted are corners that are not flush with the jamb, indicating that the door is not seating properly. Similarly, if you see light at the bottom or top of the door, it may indicate that the gap there is too large.
If you have any difficulty closing the door, that might also indicate that the door is not properly seated, or that the hinges need to be adjusted.
