This guide is for G-U multipoint locks consisting of shootbolts, tongues, rollers or hooks. G-U door locks are also a suitable replacement for old Ferco door locks. G-U swing door locks were used by Pella and many other door manufacturers.
Summary of Steps:
- Remove handle trim.
- Remove lock from door panel.
- Trim new lock to fit in door panel with shootbolt tip.
- Install new lock body in door.
- Attach shootbolt tip.
- Test operation of lock.
- Modify strike plate to fit deadbolt and spring latch. IF NEEDED
- Reinstall strike plate.
- Reinstall trim.
Before you begin, check to make sure the beveled latch is facing the proper direction for your door. If you need to reverse the latch on your G-U door lock, see how to here.
Detailed Instructions:
- Remove handles, escutcheons and lock from the door.
- Loosen the set screw on the interior handle with a hex wrench.
- Use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew the screws securing the faceplate to the door.
- Remove faceplates, spindle and cylinder tailpiece will pull out with faceplates.
- Lock runs entire length of vertical edge of door. Remove all screws and remove multipoint lock from door edge.
- If installing a lock with shootbolts, determine how much of the lock needs to be trimmed to make the lock fit in door panel with the top shootbolt:
- Lay old lock next to replacement lock, lining up bottoms so handles are both at same height. Make sure both locks are disengaged and in the unlocked position.
- If old lock is a two-piece and the shootbolt can be detached, make a mark on replacement lock to match where heights of locks match up (without the shootbolt attached).
- If old lock is a one-piece, lay shootbolt tip so top lines up with original lock top. Mark on new lock where the difference must be trimmed down so lock fits in door with the top shootbolt attached.
- If your old lock is not available: Install bottom gear and secure with 1 or 2 screws. Place shootbolt tip at top of door and mark where alligator teeth will fit into shootbolt tip. Remove lock from door and trim excess.
When trimming the main gear, your cut can be about 1/8" short; the alligator teeth must fit in connector, but connecting plate will cover up a small gap. When connecting the top shootbolt to the main gear, you want to leave 1 or 2 spaces from the end inside the coupler.

2A) If installing a lock without shootbolts, place your new tongue, hook, or roller lock, next to your existing lock, lining up the handle positions and the bottom of the lock faceplate and male your cutoff mark. Carefully measure and then make your cut.
- Once you have determined how much needs to be trimmed, you are ready to trim the lock. If you are trimming a shootbolt lock with the serrated teeth, it helps to clamp the teeth to the faceplate to keep it from moving. NOTE: 1” (25mm) of serrated teeth are necessary for connections.
- Insert the new trimmed lock inside the door making sure the bottom of the door lock is flush with the bottom of the door and the hole for the handle and key cylinder line up with the existing holes in the door. Then secure the lock to the door by inserting the screws.
4A) If you have a shootbolt lock, you will then connect the top shootbolt by placing the coupler of the top shootbolt onto the serrated teeth of the main gear. Then make sure all parts are connected by using the lever or construction key to test the door in the open position. When you lift the lever the upper and lower shootbolt should engage along with the deadbolt. Then secure the lock to the door by inserting the screws and slide the cover plate down on the top shootbolt to cover the exposed edge of trimmed hardware.
- Reinstall the handle set onto the door and test function with the door open and closed.
- ***In some cases the latch and deadbolt strike may need to be modified if you are replacing an old G-U gearbox with the new style gearbox.
- If you installed your new lock and the latch and deadbolt are slightly off from the strike plate holes, you will need to remove your strike plate and file each hole wider, lengthwise.
- To modify your faceplate, close the door almost completely so you can see where the latch and deadbolt are hitting the strike, then make your mark. The remove the strike plate and use a file to make the holes longer to accept the new latch and deadbolt.
